Alternatives to IVP Necessary?

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Feb 01, 2002 8:17 am

I am seeing a urologist for blood in my urine. I am allergic to shellfish, specifically clams. Does this mean I should not have an IVP?
My doctor says that there is another way to do a dye test, which involves running a tube up into the bladder and up the ureter into the kidney, and then releasing a dye. I can't quite see how this procedure would work, and am concerned about that level of invasive procedure.
Are there other alternatives, if I should not have an IVP?
I had an IVP 30 years ago, but it was before I became allergic to clams.

Allergy to shellfish is not considered a significant risk factor for receiving iodinated contrast. Ask for the more expensive dye (nonionic)which seems to cause less reactions.
The other test is a big deal from an invasive point of view.
