IVP dye

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Jun 04, 2002 7:43 pm

Last summer, almost exactly a year ago, I had surgery to explore and possible repair a condition in my foot (arterial-venous malformation/AVM). The doctors inserted a catheter and injected what I was told was IVP dye in order to view my circulatory structures. I had an anaphalactic reaction to the dye that was used, and I was wondering what chemicals are in the IVP dye that was used and what I might have been allergic to. Any help would be much appreciated.

Glad you asked. Most probably the culprit was the iodine in the IVP dye. Allergies are common. From the sound of your reaction, your iodine dye days are over. Nowadays with magnetic resonance angiography, Doppler ultrasound and CT, there are plenty of decent alternatives to dye injections. You probably can have the MRI dye without any problems, but I would check. Whatever you do, carry a bracelet or wear a dog tag with the message that iodinated dye injected intravenously could be very toxic to your body.
