IVP resuslts inconclusive

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Apr 15, 2002 6:16 pm

Is it possible for an IVP test to miss showing a certain area of the urinary system? I had one done as follow-up for a ureteral stricture dilation, and my urologist told me that they couldn't even see that particular area on the films.

The ureters are usually seen quite well on IVP's. Often segments of the ureters are not seen because of contractions of the ureters that "squeeze" the dye out. CT especially with contrast is a very good test for looking very closely at the upper ureters. The gold standard is retrograde ureterography where contrast is injected directly into the ureter as it enters the bladder. This is an invasive procedure, however.
