IVP

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Mar 19, 2002 1:32 pm

I had an IVP using radioactive iodine on a Monday. I had had no previous allergy to shellfish. On Friday night I had a small canape with crabmeat. On Saturday I started to itch a little on my neck. Satuday I had shrimp salad. Saturday night I broke out with a red, raised rash all over my body. The doctor has diagnosed a reaction to shellfish. I am wondering if the dye actually initiated a response to shellfish.

Delayed reactions to IVP dye of the type you described have not been reported. More likely, the reaction was to the shellfish itself.
Incidentally, the iodinated dye used for IVP's is not radioactive.
If you need to have iodine based dyes in the future, ask for "nonionic" variety. There would less of a chance of a reaction.
