how long to pass ESWL fragments

Post a new topicby samuri on Tue Dec 01, 2009 4:15 am

I had ESWL earlier this past year in the early spring. I haven't passed much of the stone fragments that still appear by x-ray in the lower part of my right kidney. I drink lots of water to try to flush them but they seem to just sit where they are. I get intermittent lower right back pain as well. My question is it unusual to still have most of the fragments still in the kidney at this point? Any recommendations to get them moving on out?

Do you have a Double J-Stent in place? if so are they in the stone street position?(lined up)How large was the stone? i've had 2 ewsl(2.5cm and 2.4cm) that lasted approx 8-9 mos each with several j-stents through-out the period(s) and 1 ewsl that failed...i'm sitting here now with a j-stent and a drainage/access tube from a pcnl that was preformed nov 12-13,2009 for a 22mm and 12.5mm in my left kidney...the reason this caught my attention is this...after my procedure i noticed that i wasn't voiding very much from my right kidney but yet i need to empty my foley bag from my left kidney quite often..this makes me wonder if we use our left kidney more than our right(majority of stone formers are in the left) you may want to ask your urologist about this and if so i would ask about pcnl it is more evasive and more costly but,5-6 weeks or shorter recovery time with-out passing any stones speaks for its-self and after passing well over 300 stones and missing so much of my life it is the best way for me to go..if they are still in your kidney after this long i would say they are not going anywhere(unless you have a stent)also if you DO have a stent and it becomes en-crusted they cant get past(encrustation does NOT show up on a ct scan)If you feel like your kidney is on fire go to the er...kidney can be damaged real quick if it becomes obstructed,Honestly i feel that you have waited long enough..time to move to next procedure or get another urologist,GoodLuck,Bruce
