Kidney Stones, Surgical optionsI suffer from Medullary Sponge Kidney which has resulted in bilateral renal calculi. I have approximately 20 stones, ranging from 8mm downwards, in each kidney situated in the calyx. I have seen 2 consultant urologists, one recommended percutaneous nephrolithotomy the other ureterosopic lasertripsy, for the removal of the stones. Do you have a view on which procedure would have the most effacacy, considering my condition?
Re: Kidney Stones, Surgical optionsIt's not possible to give a reliable opinion without seeing the x-rays, but your bigger problem is that with medullary sponge kidney you are likely to continue to make more stones. Ask your urologists about getting a 24 hour urine test for stone prevention. Medullary sponge kidney patients are more likely to have renal calcium leak hypercalciuria and hypocitraturia than the general population.
For the record, both approaches mentioned have pros and cons. It depends on the experience of the individual physician. Personally, I prefer to go for the laser approach without making holes in kidneys unless it's absolutely necessary.
