Mammogram

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Mar 08, 2002 2:12 am

I've had two mammagrams in 4 months. The last one stated:

Discussion: High resolution imaging of the left breast was performed. There is a 6.7 x 10.9 x 10.3 mm heterogeneous nodule in the 2'oclock position of the left breast. This appears slightly irregular. The measurements suggest very slight interval increase in size when compared to previous exam. Biopsy recommended. Blood flow is noted within the mass.

Impression: Suspicious heterogeneous mass 2'oclock position left breast, which appears slightly larger on the current exam. Biopsy recommended.

Note: Previous mammogram code was changed to BI-RADS Category 4.

What is your take on this? Should I worry?

The mass needs to be biopsied, obviously. There is a good chance that it is benign, but malignancy is certainly a possibility. In that event, early detection should improve the prognosis.

What does it mean when they say that there is blood flow within the mass? Is that a good thing?

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware until now that you had replied. Blood flow indicates actively metabolizing tissue such as seen in benign and malignant tumors. So it really doesn't say much in regard to benign vs. malignant. But blood flow would tell us that we are probably not dealing with a cyst. Cysts being just small sacs of pretty clear fluid need virtually no blood flow to exist.

Just one other thing. The nodule is very small and appears to have been around for a while at least in some form. It could well be benign, most of them are. Good luck!

The nodule WAS NOT CANCER... It was fibrosis. Thank You again so much for your help. I have an appointment in 6 months for a follow up sonogram. Why would he want to do this?

Not sure why they would want a follow up sonogram, but often radiologists err on the side of safety when it comes to mammo diagnosis.
