My husband had a Carotid Ultra Sound and the radiologists impression of this ultra sound was;
1.) 0-39% right ICA stenosis
2.) 40-59% left ICA stenosis
3.) 60-79% right ECA stenosis
4.) 80-99% left ECA stenosis
Can you tell me exactly what these figures mean? Also, what should be done for this?
Thank you,
Sharon Salings

Re: Carotid Ultra SoundThe ICA's (internal carotid arteries) are the ones that are important because they supply blood directly to the brain.
Generally, surgery is indicated if there is narrowing of the ICA greater than 60-70%. Both his ICA's are below that range, so his problems will probably be treated conservatively with medication that makes it less likely that he will form clots in the narrowed vessels. The external carotid arteries supply blood to the structures of the face. When they get narrowed alternate pathways develop. In any event, they do not get operated on. It's the ICA's that count.
