IBS and GERD

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Jan 26, 2002 2:55 pm

I was Dx with IBS about 12 yrs. ago and then GERD I have taken propulsid, and most recently aciphex. I can go for months with no symptoms, and all of a sudden, I am down in bed from the pain( lower abdomen to chest area,I feel as though I have been beaten up)Also I seem to be so tired when it gets bad. I have been to see the specialist a year ago, his feelings were that since my symptoms tend to come and go, that doing the upper GI scope would not show much. But here I am again, sick! My Doc has prescibed aciphex and sucralfate. Here my history: I am 33, 5'6, 110 pounds. I have no appetite lately, but eating does relieve some of the discomfort that I feel. I wonder if the fact that I have very high stress in my life can account for any thing!? Last summer I had a complete ultra-sound of the chest and abdomen. That came back perfect. Would that have shown anything of any significance? Just wanted your thoughts. Please respond.

You really need to talk to a gastroenterologist or at least go to a GI website. Just a few thoughts...
Stess can certainly provoke GI symptoms. Ultrasound is a good test for the gallbladder, but is useless for the upper and lower GI tract. The upper tract (esophagus, stomach and small bowel) can be studies by upper GI series which is noninvasive or by upper endoscopy which is more accurate but more invasive.
