Barrium SwallowHello, I am a 31 year old who just recently in the last month and half had a barrium swallow with the fizzy stuff. The symptoms I have had were a tightness in the throat for 2 months. The results were all normal. I have since then been experiencing the same pain and ended up in the Er 3 time last week were from my larynx to the mid of my chest gets spastice to the point its so painful. My doctor put me on anxiety meds and I felt better as far as the anxiety goes but the feelings were still there but mild and dull. I recently have been put on prevacid 30mg per day still I have only been on it for 4 days and I tell you the pain that I feel is unbarable and yet its said this can only be stress. Any advise you may have would be great. How accurate is the GI test and could this be something like cancer or worst. I had a endospy done a year and .5 done and gerd gastritis, small hietal hernia was found and axid reflux. I guess my question is were do I go from here. My docotr does not want to do any test and I feel more anxious as I am not reasured that stress can cause this or can it? I have gotten second opinions but there from walk-inn clinics and I have conflicting answers like it could be bile from gallblader to barriums swallow is no good to get a endscopy done. I had this test done a year and a half ago for something else do I really need this again if the Barrium was normal my doctor says no what do you think. Also, could it be a thyroid problem or even a muscle that is going extremly tight. Please help sorry for being so long winded. kind regards
Re: Barrium SwallowYour issue is quite complex, and I cannot, obviously, make the diagnosis here.
However, having done barium swallows and upper GI's for 30 years or so, I have often come across patients who have gastroesophageal reflux who have symptoms similar to what you describe. They may or may not have hiatal hernias. What happens is that at certain times, the contents of the stomach pass back into the lower esophagus and cause damage. The acid in the stomach irritates the walls of the esophagus causing inflammation (esophagitis), and that inflammation can make the entire esophagus irritable and spastic (cardiospasm). Such spasm can cause severe chest pain. This is just a guess. You need to talk with your own doctors.
