Cancer of the esophagus

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Aug 02, 2001 1:02 am

My Mother found out today that she has cancer of the esophagus. My question is how likely is it someone will survive this and what is the normal course of treatment? This first started a few days ago when she found out she had an infected ulcer in her stomach, and when they got the results back from a biopsy they found cancer in her esophagus. How are ulcers of the stomach and cancer of the esophagus related? Thank you.

This is a diagnostic radiology site that generally deals with detecting, but not treating disease. However, as a general rule esophageal carcinoma is treated surgically these days. That would, of course, depend on where it is, how big it is and the general condition of the patient. The surgeon removes the affected part of the esophagus and pulls the stomach or part of the stomach up into the chest. For further information, I would recommend that you go to a gastroenterology site such as http://www.acg.gi.org/
