I was recently diagnosed with a small stomach ulcer. I am on medication for nausea and gastric distress. In about six weeks I'm to have an EGD. What does this test entail and can I ask for a biopsy of the ulcerated area?
Many thanks.
Re: EGDEGD means esophagogastroduodenoscopy which simply means putting a tube through your esophagus into your stomach and then into the duodenum all the while looking through the special fiberoptic scope at the walls of the various structures it passes by. Most peptic ulcers are benign, but if the person doing the test sees something that looks suspicious he/she is certain to do a biopsy. Of course, you will need some conscious sedation to go through this. Good luck!
